The Adventurous Man: Taking the Risk

Are You An Adventurous Man?

My first trip abroad was to Merida, Venezuela. I was 20 years old. It was an incredible experience. It was exciting getting my passport, experiencing a new country, culture, foods, and meeting great people. I thoroughly had an incredible time. It has been over 20 years now since my first trip abroad and it is still a fond memory of mine.

As of today, I have been to 13 countries, and I have lived in Ecuador twice, and survived a 13 month deployment to Iraq.

Where are all the brave adventurous men?

In my travels, I have seen more solo women travelers than men. Why is this? Are men not as brave as women to travel alone internationally? Are men not as adventurous as women? Are men not interested in traveling the world alone?

I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but what I think is men have lost their sense of adventure. Or, perhaps, they just have given up on living their adventurous side because they're married, have kids, and just don't see it as a possibility for them.

What happened to the desire to discover distant lands, to discovering new worlds, and to rely on your own wit, courage, and determination?

One of my favorite documentaries is, 180° South. Below is the trailer.

My favorite Quotes from 180° South

"The whole purpose of planning something like Everest is to effect some sort of spiritual and physical gain and if you compromise the process, you’re an asshole when you start out and you’re an asshole when you get back.”

“The hardest thing in the world is to simplify your life. It’s so easy to make it complex. What’s important is leading an examined life.”

“You learn that how you got there was what’s important. Not what you accomplished.”

“The word adventure has gotten overused. For me, when everything goes wrong – that’s when adventure starts.”

“I met a lot of young people who asked me what books to read or films to watch. I think that is a good way to start, but there's no substitute for just going there.”

“So, it’s kind of like the quest for the holy grail. Well, you know, who gives a shit what the holy grail is. It’s the quest is what’s important.”

My Favorite quote

"You get to the top of a wall, there's nothing up there. Lionel Terray, the great French climber called it 'The conquistadors of the useless.' Yeah, the end result is absolutely useless, but every time I travel, I learn something new and hopefully I get to be a better person."

Perhaps, that is why I travel, and why I am traveling now. I always learn something new and I hope to be become a better person.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask." -180° South

What am I going to learn about myself during this journey?

Will I become a better person?

Will I become a better man?

Will I inspire men to start taking their health seriously?

Will I inspire men to travel and live out their adventurous side - whatever that may mean for them?

It doesn't really matter to know the answers because, "the best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask."
