The Remarkable Practice – Paul Velick

men self leadership

Self leadership is the foundation Paul Velick built his entire coaching practice around, and it’s worth understanding what that actually means before diving into what he teaches. It’s not a personality trait some men have and others don’t. It’s a practice, and practices can be learned by anyone willing to actually do the work.

The Remarkable Practice

Self-Leadership Coaching opens the door for “self-seekers and owners” to essentially become their own Man. It is the doorway into personal ownership and a fully expressed life based upon your thoughts, feelings, words and actions.

Self leaders merge freedom and responsibility into a driving advantage. This brand of Coaching helps men claim their own style for accomplishments and deserved success.

What Self Leadership Actually Means in Practice

Velick, who coaches out of Santa Monica, California under the name PaulBobCoach, built his method around what he calls the Ten Domains: a map of the areas of a man’s life, from character to finances to spiritual grounding, that all affect each other. Score yourself honestly across those domains, he argues, and you’ll see exactly which ones are quietly dragging the rest down. It’s a blunt kind of self-assessment, and that’s exactly why it works. Most men can rattle off their strengths without much trouble. Naming the domain that’s actually falling apart, quietly, in the background, is a lot harder, and a lot more useful.

That diagnostic approach is the backbone of what he calls The Remarkable Practice, the same framework behind his book, “For Remarkable Men: Principles & Practices For A Remarkable Life.” The premise is straightforward: most men are operating on defaults they never actually chose, inherited from family, culture, or whatever worked well enough to get by. Self leadership starts with actually examining those defaults instead of running on autopilot.

Beyond one-on-one coaching, Velick also runs something called The Men’s Circle, a recurring group setting where men practice this same self leadership work alongside each other instead of only in private sessions. That group format matters, because a lot of what keeps men stuck isn’t a lack of information, it’s the lack of anyone else holding them to what they already said they wanted.

His book goes further into the premise, arguing that most men are living according to expectations set by family, friends, society, and inherited cultural narratives they never actually examined or agreed to. The work of self leadership, in his framing, is dissolving those unexamined defaults and choosing, on purpose, who you actually want to be instead of who you were handed.

This interview with Velick was originally featured as part of the New Man Health Summit, a free online event built around exactly this kind of conversation, men talking honestly with other men about health, leadership, and what it actually takes to thrive.

That’s the same territory coaching lives in generally, helping a man take ownership of the parts of his life he’s been running on autopilot instead of running on purpose. If you want to look deeper into what Velick teaches, visit PaulBobCoach, or if you’re looking for that same kind of self leadership work closer to home, contact me directly.

None of this works as a one-time realization. Self leadership, the way Velick teaches it and the way it shows up in coaching generally, is a practice you keep returning to, not a conclusion you reach once and move on from. That’s the whole point of calling it a practice instead of a fix.
